Prep Now to Minimize Hurricane Damage Later

With summer right around the corner, another hurricane season is upon us. Last year, the beginning of the season was relatively quiet, but the end of the season brought the double header of Hurricanes Ian and Nicole. As a homeowner, one of the most important action steps you can take is to be prepared for a hurricane ahead of time. Having helped thousands of homeowners recover financially after a hurricane, we have seen that those homeowners who are prepared may experience less severe damage and they are less stressed throughout the recovery process. As you are prepping for this year’s season, here are some tips to keep in mind:

Budget-Friendly Tips

  • Keep your gutter maintenance up-to-date throughout the hurricane season. Regularly check for any debris in your gutters and make sure that water can easily flow out. Also make sure that the water from your gutters is routed to flow at least six feet away from your home. If your gutters are shorter than this, you can install gutter extenders. This will help prevent water backing up into any cracks in your foundations or into your home.
  • If you have stucco outside your home, check for and patch any cracks now. This can prevent water from entering into those cracks and causing damage during a storm.
  • Check that your homeowners insurance is up-to-date. If you have made any recent renovations or upgrades to your home, make sure that your policy reflects this. Additionally, save a copy of your policy onto a thumb drive and print out a hard copy. Place both of these in a waterproof bag in case you need to evacuate your home. Save Get Paid For Your Claim’s phone number- (954) 914-5454 – into the contacts on your phone and print a copy for the waterproof bag as well. If your home is damaged, contact us right away so you can be at the front of the line for making a claim.

Additional Tips

  • If you have standard windows, consider upgrading to hurricane impact ones. These windows undergo rigorous testing to ensure they are able to withstand hurricane-force winds. If the window is hit by a projectile, it may spiderweb, but will remain intact, preventing rain and debris from entering your home. A second benefit of hurricane impact windows is that no preparation is required before a hurricane, so you don’t have the stress of a shutter malfunctioning or breaking at an inopportune time.
  • Install a home generator. If your home is without power for an extended period of time, this will allow your air conditioner and refrigerator to keep running, minimizing food spoilage as well as damage from high humidity in the home.

Hurricanes aren’t going away any time soon, but preparation can minimize their destruction and the discomfort and stress they cause. If your home is damaged from a hurricane, or any other cause, contact Get Paid For Your Claim to start the claims process right away to receive the insurance money you are owed.
