Proactively Creating a Home Inventory List

If you experienced a major loss, you would file a claim with your insurance company. The insurance company would ask for an inventory of all the items that were damaged and needed to be replaced. Could you provide this? It seems like a simple request, but most homeowners actually have no idea what they own or its value. Consider the following examples:

  • How many towels do you own? What brand are they? How much would it cost to replace them?
  • How many books do you have? Hardcover or softcover? What are their brands and replacement values?
  • How many outfits do your kids’ have? What are their brands and replacement values?

Were you able to answer these “simple” questions off the top of your head? Probably not. However, the collective value of the items that you own is probably at least in the tens of thousands of dollars, and for many people, is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. If you’ve suffered a major loss, you will have to recreate this list from memory, likely forgetting many items and therefore losing the insurance compensation you would have received for them.

Your best defense against finding yourself in this situation is to proactively create a home inventory list. Begin your home inventory list by selecting a room. Starting with the most valuable items in the room and working to the least valuable, photograph and list out each item, the brand, and the replacement value -if you know it. If that sounds like too daunting a task, another option is to narrate a video of the room, discussing each item. Make sure to include any drawers and narrate the items in the drawers as well. Work your way through each room in the house. We suggest updating your inventory annually.

While it’s fine to keep a copy of your home inventory list on your phone, make sure to have a back-up saved in the cloud or on a thumb drive in a bank vault or other secure location.

If you are the victim of a hurricane, fire, or other major catastrophe, call the public adjusters at Get Paid For Your Claim. If you already have a home inventory list, we will price out the current replacement cost of the items to ensure your insurance company compensates you for their full value. While, in many cases, we can create a home inventory for you (and do all the time for our clients) if you already have one, that will greatly expedite the claims process, giving you access to your money sooner.

Hopefully, you will never need to use your home inventory list, however, if you have a major loss, having the inventory and contacting Get Paid For Your Claim will simplify and minimize the stress of the insurance claims process.
